WOW! It has finally happened and we are so excited! One of our best selling groundcover SunSparkler® Sedum ‘Lime Zinger’ has produced a variegated branch sport featuring stunning cream-colored edges on every leaf.
We’ve named this wonderfully colorful new groundcover SunSparkler® Sedum ‘Lime Twister’ after its parent ‘Lime Zinger’.
This ultra-cool plant was discovered in February of 2014 as a tiny 2-leaf branch sport on a small 128-cell plug of SunSparkler® Sedum ‘Lime Zinger’.
The small plug was planted into a larger container and we carefully grew the plant until it was large enough for us to take a single cutting to make a total of 2 plants.
Over the next few weeks and months, we were able to produce over 1,500 small plantlets of the new ‘Lime Twister’.
This allowed us to check for the STABILITY of this variegation and make sure it did not easily or quickly revert back to the original green parent of ‘Lime Zinger’.
We are happy to see that out of the total 1,500 plugs we’ve currently produced, we have only had to remove a SINGLE stem which had reverted back to the original ‘Lime Zinger’.
This is well below a 1% reversion rate and we feel it is extremely stable, so we are happy to introduce this new SunSparkler® Sedum ‘Lime Twister’ to the gardening public in Spring of 2015!
During the summer of 2014, we grew the original variegated sport outdoors in FULL SUN with NO BURN and anxiously awaited to see if the flowers were the same pink coloration as ‘Lime Zinger’.
We are happy to report that the flowers have the same rose-pink coloration as the original parent plant ‘Lime Zinger’.
You can see a close-up of a single flower stem in this picture on the right.
Here’s a close-up picture of the original mother plant SunSparkler® Sedum ‘Lime Zinger’ pp#24,632 which gave rise to this colorful branch-sport which we are now introducing as SunSparkler® Sedum ‘Lime Twister’ ppaf.
